What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome is a debilitating illness that affects mostly women, generally between the ages of 20 – 50. The problem with it, is that diagnosis can be tricky and there is no single test available that can either rule it in or rule it out .
The American College of Rheumatology has established certain guidelines for the diagnosis of fibromyalgia that include widespread aching pain for at least three months and a minimum of 11 locations on your body that are unusually tender with the application of even mild pressure. A doctor checking for fibromyalgia will generally take a detailed medical history and press firmly on specific points of your upper body, your head and various joints to determine whether or not you feel pain. However, there is controversy about the validity of these guidelines and their ability and reasonableness to effectively diagnose this condition. Causes of fibromyalgia? There doesn’t seem to be a lot of agreement in this area either. Some feel that an increase in neurotransmitters (brain chemicals that signal pain) in the brains of fibromyalgia sufferers cause the brain’s pain receptors (neurons) to become overly sensitive. As a result, the neurons become more susceptible to pain, so they overreact to pain signals.
Others believe that fibromyalgia results from or coincides with sleep disturbances, hormonal factors, stress, or viral/bacterial infections. Cold, damp weather and monthly hormonal changes may trigger flare-ups.
ACWORTH CHIROPRACTOR - The Upper Cervical Approach
An injury to the upper cervical spine, that has an effect on the central nervous system, may have triggered an underlying abnormality in the body which may cause fibromyalgia. This injury may have resulted from a fall, an accident or a sports injury.
An Upper Cervical doctor is specially trained to address trauma to the upper cervical spine, which can cause misalignment of the atlas (the top vertebra in the spine). This misalignment may result in nerve interference that compromises the body’s natural ability to function and heal properly.
Our chiropractor in Acworth can apply a correction (adjustment) to the atlas or C1 vertebra. The effect of this single correction removes irritation to the nerve centers that control muscle activity, often alleviating the symptoms and the cause of fibromyalgia. Through the use of very precise diagnostic tools, including X-rays and digital infrared imaging, an Upper Cervical doctor can determine the exact location of an atlas misalignment. Following the application of the Upper Cervical correction, these same tools confirm that the proper correction has taken place.
In one study of 23 participants, who had fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, all of whom received Upper Cervical care, every participant was able to resume their normal activities, including full-time work, within seven months of beginning care. For fibromyalgia sufferers, Upper Cervical Chiropractic care can end their longstanding battle with pain and fatigue and give them their lives back.

I thank God for Dr. Lukas and Upper Cervical Care.”
- Doreatha N.
“The Upper Cervical procedure is very precise and underwhelming. There is no twisting of the head or the neck. When I reposition the atlas, the body’s ability to self-heal is restored. I do not do any of the healing; the patient’s body does it all.”
